Washer Button Brooch Tutorial/Scrap-It-Girl October Challenge

This month's challenge over at Scrap-It-Girl is to use at least 12 buttons on a project, so I decided to make a button brooch using a metal washer as the base. Here's how I made it:

Begin with a metal washer that you can purchase at any hardware or home improvement store; several buttons, a pin back, some charms and liquid adhesive of your choice. (I like/used Liquid Fusion, which I purchased at Hobby Lobby.)

Apply a dab of adhesive to each button and attach to the washer base. Once the first layer of buttons has been attached, stack/adhere additional buttons to the first layer to cover any gaps where the metal from the washer is showing:

Once I got all of the buttons glued onto the washer, I decided that a few charms would look nice, so I attached those using Liquid Fusion as well:

Once the front of the brooch dries, flip it over and glue on the pin back, and allow to completely dry:

For a different look, a ribbon can be tied to the pin back to turn the brooch into a pendant for a necklace. Here's another photo of the completed brooch...I love the way it looks with my fall scarves and jackets:

Engagement Shadow Box

Next month my lovely friend and co-worker Sarah G. will marry her sweetheart Daniel, so I made the shadow box shown above to commemmorate their upcoming special day. Using the wedding invitation as the main focus of the shadow box, (I blurred out the vital invitation info for this post to protect their privacy), I added some nice rustic touches like the burlap, lace and aged paper flowers to coordinate with the barn wood frame of the shadow box. I then cut one of her engagement photos into an oval and double matted it on coordinating cardstock. (By the way, it was reeeeeally hard to decide which of the engagement photos of Sarah and Daniel to use for this project...all of the photos were so beautiful!) I tucked a little metal tag that says "A Perfect Moment" in the corner of the photo, and then covered a wooden letter "P" with coordinating printed paper; sanding and inking the edges for a distressed antique look. By wrapping a piece of hemp twine around the "P", I was able to attach a cute little silver tag that said "Cherish". Here's a close-up view of those elements:

I am so pleased at how the shadow box turned out, and Sarah loved it! I will definitely be making more shadow box creations, because this one was so much fun to make!

Good Read! "The Secret Diary of Anne Boleyn"

A while back I read Robin Maxwell's first novel, The Secret Diary of Anne Boleyn, and thoroughly enjoyed it! This wonderful, historical fiction novel begins when a former servant of Anne Boleyn presents Anne's secret diary, (which she had kept hidden for many years), to Anne's only living child, Elizabeth. As Elizabeth reads the diary pages, which capture her mother's innermost thoughts and feelings, she comes to know the mother that was taken away and killed when Elizabeth was only 3 years old; gaining a love and respect for the woman that she was taught to despise through false pretenses. The revelations that Elizabeth encounters while reading her mother's diary forms her resolve that she will never allow a man to rule over her, and ultimately determines her status to remain an unmarried queen and the last of the Tudors to reign on the throne of England.

If you enjoy reading historical fiction about the Tudors, then I highly recommend this book to you!
